about

This unyieldingly difficult album commission is for the game Shattered Realms by DracoWyrm Media (www.dracowyrm.com). Despite the difficulty and time it took to finish this audio commission from start to finish, I am also extremely proud of it. If I never did another JRPG soundtrack in my life, I would be satisfied having accomplished this.

Shattered Realms' soundtrack was conceived as trying to go the route of a 32-bit, late 90s, early 2000s JRPG soundtrack with the Roland Sound Canvas SC8850 (specifically the virtual instrument version) and Korg M1 (also virtual) and reasonably primitive GM soundfonts as the base of achieving this sound. This was my idea and it quickly became clear that trying to do a quality selection of game tracks with this alone would be a fool's errand in a labyrinth of... smart things, I guess. Eventually, additional instrumentation would need to be added onto it with instruments like the Roland JV, Roland XV, the Roland Fantom, Roland SRX-06, Korg Triton, Yamaha Motif XF (all made available in Native Instruments Kontakt form), and random samples and sound effects from other sources. I couldn't possibly name all I used and where here. Music was produced largely blind - as in I did not see much of any graphics or gameplay material before going to work, only focusing to create that which sounded like it fulfilled the commissioned purpose and working with it until it reached both my and DracoWyrm's satisfaction just listening to it.

For time and practicality constraints, this soundtrack features some of my oldest surviving compositions that had never been used anywhere else before properly arranged and released - Tracks 5 and 20 predate 2010 and Tracks 2, 12 and 18 are newer but predate 2018.

Special thanks to Blake Price who put up with my whining and excuses for a handful of years and allowed me the time to really see this project and the songs to their full potential.
